Do you think you are living a healthy life? Unless we sometimes deviate from the path, most of us think we are doing a good job of maintaining our health with good eating habits (or at least GOOD) and exercising whenever we can. But is that enough to be considered “healthy?”

According to a recent study, very few adults experience the conditions for a healthy lifestyle. The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that only 3% of American adults achieved full points in what the authors say are the four basic ways to live a healthy life. Only 13.8% met three criteria; 34.2% met only two conditions. Women scored slightly better than men.

See how well you weigh the four keys to the researchers for health:

  • Do you smoke?
  • Are you able to maintain a healthy weight (BMI of 18-25), or are you losing weight successfully to get a healthy weight?
  • Do you eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day?
  • Do you exercise 30 minutes or more, 5 times a week?

The good news is that these behaviors should not be strange to you, as all but one are an important part of the weight loss clinic. Numbers 2 to 4 are the basis of the WLC program, the practices we regularly discuss, write about, and recommend.

Everyone knows that smoking is bad for your health. If you are one of the lucky ones who has never been a nicotine addict, pat him on the back. Smokers, I hope you are working hard to stop your habit. It is impossible to underestimate the importance of smoking cessation in your life – and for the sake of those around you.

4 steps and more

While such four traits are essential to a healthy lifestyle, some may argue that additional factors must be considered. What could be on your list?

Just for fun, I came up with my own list of top 10 healthy behaviors (more than four bases) that contribute to a healthy lifestyle and personal satisfaction:

  • Wash and clean daily to keep your teeth and gums healthy and free of infections.
  • Get proper rest at night. People who are well-rested not only cope better with stress but also better manage their diet. Studies have shown that lack of sleep can impair our “hunger hormones” – and possibly lead to overeating.
  • Enjoy family meals regularly. This allows parents to set a good example, can improve their nutrition, and sets the stage for happy conversations. Communicating with family and / or friends is a powerful factor in healthy living.
  • Smile and laugh a lot several times a day. It keeps you focused, and it helps you to deal with situations that could drive you crazy. Read jokes, watch a sitcom, or tell jokes to express those feelings of happiness.
  • Meditate, pray, or receive comfort for at least 10-20 minutes each day. Meditation is good for your soul, helps you to cope with the demands of daily life, and may even help lower your blood pressure.
  • Get a pedometer and let it encourage you to walk, walk, walk. Forget about how many minutes of work you need; do your best to fit in with the many steps of your day. Regardless of how you find it, exercise can help relieve stress, burn calories, and boost your self-esteem.
  • Stand upright. You will look lighter by 5 pounds if you stand up and strengthen your abdominal muscles. Whenever you walk, think “tall and strong” to get the most out of movement.
  • Try yoga. Standing helps to increase strength and flexibility and improve balance. These are important areas for adults in particular, and both men and women can benefit.
  • Grow protein. This nutrient is an important part of your diet, and can make up from 10% -35% of your total calories. Protein stays longer in your stomach; combine it with a high fiber diet and you will feel full of fewer calories. Enjoy small portions of nuts, low-fat milk, beans, lean meat, chicken, or fish.
  • Lastly, have a positive attitude. Do your best to look at life as if “a glass is half full.” You have to believe in yourself, have good support plans, and think positively (“I think I can, I think I can …”) in order to be successful.
