Cleaning vintage clothes

How to clean vintage clothing varies depending on the age of the garment and the type of fabric. The main rule of thumb is not to put anything vintage through the washer or dryer. Hand washing or dry cleaning is the best way to clean a vintage, although I have used the washing machine. As a sink when the garment is too big to fit in the kitchen sink, but be careful not to use the agitator. When the garment is soak. I usually fill the washing machine half full with warm water, a tablespoon of salt. And mild detergent and let it soak. To move the garment, I use a long wooden spoon to move the garment, being careful not to tear the fabric.

Cleaning of vintage clothes according to the type of fabric of the garment

Never hand washes velvet, silk or rayon crepe. These fabrics should always be dry cleaned, if cleaning is necessary. Although older silk garments (especially structured silk). Can fray due to the high heat and harsh chemicals used by dry cleaners. You need to make sure that the silk item is strong enough to clean. It is likely that the silk will bleed or the fibers may separate during hand washing. Rayon crepe was so popular from the to the 40s and is a durable material, unless you get it wet it will shrink a few sizes. Velvet is easy to change by washing, steaming and especially from ironing. It will cause the fibers to lie flat and take on a shiny appearance, which is damage.

To hand wash most vintage garments,

Use Luke warm water, a tablespoon of table salt (to control bleeding on fabric). And a mild detergent such as Woo lite, Draft or Ivory soap flakes. If the material is durable, I often use Tide. If the item smells bad, add baking soda or white vinegar to the mixture, a few tablespoons of each item. If the garment has only a small defect, such as a single stain, I recommend one of the following stain removers. One of my favorite methods is the Rengøringsfirma solution that comes in a box of Dryer. It can apply without rinsing. It’s great on fresh stains and good on old stains. Other stain removers that don’tneede washing include applying white vinegar, rubbing alcohol. Or the likes of Dryer, Tide to Go pens can apply and air dried. All these stain removers should have a white cloth under the stain. You are cleaning so that it reaches the stain.

Spot removal methods that need to rinse out after application include:

Ox clean spray – I use this often and depending on the material on the spot for 30 minutes to 2 days. And then rinse and hand wash and rinse again. Then air dry in an area without direct sunlight. Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and water mixed in equal parts into a paste. Apply the glue to the stain. Let sit for 30 minutes, then rinse, hand wash, rinse again and air dry in an area out of direct sunlight. Aspirin, cream of tartar and water in equal parts mixed into a paste. Apply the glue to the stain. Let sit for 30 minutes to several hours, then rinse, hand wash, rinse again and air dry in an area out of direct sunlight.

Lemon juice with a layer of salt applied to the stain and then placed in full sun for several hours. Rinse solution, hand wash, rinse and air dry. This method is useful for mold or rust, but is also useful for other stains.

A Clorox beach pen can apply to a white stain, as long as it is not synthetic.

On most synthetic materials, the bleach turns whitish yellow. And is very difficult to remove, especially on polyester and nylon. The pen can several times. When you are meet with the results, you can rinse it off . It does not need to wash again after rinsing; it can left to your own discretion. Wink is a porcelain rust remover but can use on durable white materials. The best way to do this is to place the stained area on top of an open bowl.Blot the stain with water. And then spray the flash onto the stain. Let it sit for a few moments, if the stain is still there you can . After application, rinse , and then hand wash, rinse and air dry. White can dry in direct sunlight. I know a few people who recommend applying hairspray to a spot. And letting it sit for 30 minutes to a few hours, then hand wash, rinse, and air dry. I haven’t had success with this method, but I know people who like it.

If the stain still remains after hand washing and spot cleaning,

There are still some methods that may help. I have success with all four of these solutions and recommend them all. They are a solution of white vinegar and water in 1 part vinegar to 3 parts cold water soak. This is the safest method and you can soak the garment for several hours to 2 days. You need to hand wash after soaking to avoid the vinegar smell.
